This paper provides a brief description of the GEMCAR project, which was supported by the European Commission under the Competitive and Sustainable Growth Programme of Framework V (EC contract G3RD-CT-1999- 00024). The paper outlines the motivation for this work, its organisation, the consortium, technical activities and the aims and objectives of the project, primarily to introduce the more detailed papers that complete the project workshop. A brief overview of the GEMCAR Guidelines, which represents the main output of the project (and which the subsequent papers aim to illustrate), is also included.
