Abstract Based on the American criteria, this article attempts to put forward the evaluation criteria of the end and middle part of the car, which are the values of absorbing energy of the end of the train and acceleration of the cabin. To compare the difference between the original and modified crashworthy train, we crashed the 25-type original passenger car with a rigid wall first. On the basis of the results of plastic displacement, acceleration and collision force, we took two detailed modifying measures, i.e. weakening the structure of the end of floor and strengthening the structure of the cabin. At the same time we placed special energy-absorbing equipment on the end of the car body to absorb more energy when collision happened. At last, the modified 25-type crashworthy car crashed with the rigid wall on the same conditions. The results show that large plastic deformation happens at the end of the crashworthy car and a small elastic deformation at the cabin, that the displacement of plastic deformation is larger and the collision force is smaller, and that the criterion of acceleration is improved obviously.
