Biological tissues assesment using transmitted microwave signals

The use of electromagnetic waves to image the human body is an ongoing research topic, in particular, prototype systems have been developed to image the breast with the aim of detecting and diagnosing malignancy [1-3]. At the University of Calgary, our main focus has been the development of a monostatic radar system. The first generation prototype was tested with 9 patients, generating intriguing results [4]. Currently, the second generation prototype (Figure 1) is being used for a larger patient study.
