Electromagnetic design of a permanent magnet Flux-Switching-Machine as a direct-driven 3 MW wind power generator

In this paper the design of a permanent magnet excited Flux-Switching-Machine (FSPM) for the use as a direct driven 3 MW wind power generator with a speed n = 15 rpm and a torque M = 1.9 MNm is shown. Based on an already designed and tested 28-pole three-phase permanent magnet Flux-Switching-Machine as variable-speed industrial drive for 400 V Y, 45 kW, 1000 … 3000 rpm, the basic geometrical dimensions are derived and some design rules for Flux-Switching-Machines are explained. The designed FSPM is compared with a conventional permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) with rotor surface-mounted magnets and similar dimensions. Finally, the special characteristics of Flux-Switching-Machines and the differences to permanent magnet synchronous machines with rotor surface-mounted magnets are highlighted.
