Abstract A vaulting pole is a combined pivot and energy storage device that enables top pole vaulters to reach heights of over 6 m. This paper describes how modern Olympic poles are highly optimised in terms of material selection and geometry. It also describes how modern techniques in composite production are enabling special design features such as tapered wall thickness and initially bent poles.
