Hammering noise modelling – Nonlinear dynamics of a multi-stage gear train

A nonlinear dynamic model of a part of an actual truck timing multi-stage gear system which consists on a 3-gears 2-mesh configuration was built. It included gear backlash nonlinearity, parametric excitation and internal displacement excitation induced by the mesh process. A boundary value problem formulation treated with a finite difference scheme in the time domain was used in conjunction with an arc-length continuation to obtain the periodical steady state responses. Simulations demonstrate the ability of the proposed strategy to describe dynamics of the nonlinear gear system. Complex behaviours were exhibited in the area of primary and secondary softening type resonances.
