Assessing Group Work

The article discusses possible ways of measuring both group productivity and individual contributions. Various suggestions are considered as to which aspects of group work should be assessed, how individual contributions to the group can be measured, and what approaches should be used when evaluating the quality and quantity of a group's output. It is argued that a fair, reliable, and valid assessment system needs to reward both individual effort and group collaboration, should involve both teachers and pupils in making these judgments, and that the assessment criteria needs to be known and understood by pupils prior to beginning the group activity.
