USER REQUIREMENTS OF INTEGRATED TELEMATICS APPLICATIONS

The integration of Telematics systems using 'common tools' such as smart cards, information networks, etc. is the main objective of the IADS (Integrated Applications for Digital Sites) programmes initiated by EU DGXIII. DISTINCT (Deployment and Integration of Smart Card Technology and Information Networks for Cross Sector Telematics) is one of the leading projects in this programme aiming at the use of smart cards as a 'common' tool to integrate applications in the Transport, Rural and Urban areas, Elderly and Disabled and other Telematics sectors. The paper presents the methodology and approaches defined in the project level and followed by all demonstration sites to define the user requirements of the integrated applications. It is obvious that bringing different systems together will impose some rules and restrictions on the service providers to access and share information both in the site and the cross-site levels. These involve, in some cases, further developments and additional investment to accomplish the objective of integration. It is also remarkable that the integration of systems would bring conflicts in the different group's requirements, such as the type and details of personal information that end users are required to provide and the level of accessing this information by local and other service providers.
