INTELLIGENT VEHICLE-HIGHWAY SYSTEMS AND INCIDENT MANAGEMENT

This article considers concepts being applied today in the areas of quick identification of, and response to, incidents and relates how intelligent vehicle highway system (IVHS) technologies may serve to complement those actions. At the control center, IVHS will support the development of more capable control logic to improve the system response, to better predict the nature and duration of incident delays, to use origin-destination information in providing routing information, and to better support coordinated decisionmaking through the use of networking, improved operator interface, and map-based information. In the field improved technologies will reduce detection, indentification, and response times while improving the information provided to travelers. The article discusses in detail, the stages of incident management.
