Pre-evaluation of the "mandatory active" LAVIA: assessment of usability, utility and acceptance

The French Ministry of Transport has undertaken a major evaluation program to assess the effects of the LAVIA system (or ISA [intelligent speed adaptation] system) in terms of both driver acceptance and effectiveness. The LAVIA system operates in three modes: Advisory, Voluntary Active and Mandatory Active. Before launching the experiment with a fleet of twenty vehicles and a cohort of 100 participants, a preliminary evaluation on a limited group of drivers was carried out with two prototypes. The purpose of this pre-evaluation was to make an initial diagnosis of the usability, utility and acceptability to drivers of the assistance offered by the LAVIA system and to generate methodological recommendations for the collection and analysis of experimental data from the whole fleet. The main findings of the pre-evaluation are presented and discussed.
