Challenge: How Effective is Routing for Wireless Networking

Abstract : In this paper, we examine the question of how effective routingis for reliably and efficiently delivering data in a wirelessnetwork. With the emergence of the Internet of Things, thereis a renewed focus on multi-hop wireless networking to connectthese systems of smart-devices. Many of the proposalsto support this new networking paradigm continue to use theconcept of routing: a path between users is formed via a seriesof point-to-point links. We believe that the characteristicsof the wireless environment inherently make link-basedrouting unsuitable for wireless networking, and that new approachesneed to be considered. In this paper, we demonstratethat link-based routing (1) experiences high packetloss due to the inherently unreliable nature of control information,(2) is unable to ensure reliable message delivery in alossy environment, and (3) incurs a high cost for route maintenanceand repair.
