ADVANCED STOP-LINES FOR CYCLISTS

An Advanced Stop-Line (ASL) for cyclists is designed to help cyclists through a signalled intersection by enabling them to move ahead of motor vehicles and clear the intersection first. This makes them more visible to motorists and can reduce the risk of conflict especially with turning vehicles. Experience with successful schemes in the Netherlands was followed by the introduction in the U.K. of experimental schemes. The article looks at the results of studies of some of these schemes. The particular schemes were chosen to assess the operation of the ASLs of various layouts under a wide range of traffic conditions.
