Exploiting adaptive modulation in E-band software-defined backhaul network

As a millimeter wave (mmW) band, the E-band is promising to offer a high capacity for 5G backhaul network with a low atmospheric attenuation. As a key issue of E-band propagation, the rain attenuation has to be taken into account carefully. Unfortunately, the weather is uncontrollable in the real world, and the backhaul network has to be adapted for the various weather. To address this problem, the adaptive modulation technology is introduced into E-band software-defined backhaul network in this paper. Data from a rain gauge sensor is employed to improve the performance of the data transmission. The impact of the sensing error on the reliability of the transmission is analysed through numerical results.
