50 GHz quantum photonic storage in a cavity-protected rare-earth ensemble

We demonstrate ultrafast transfer of a broadband photonic qubit to a dense rare-earth ensemble cavity protected against decoherence due to inhomogeneous broadening. Storage in highly coherent superradiant collective states enables long-lived memories and optical-to-microwave conversion.
