Toxicological Studies with Nanoscale Materials

Publisher Summary This chapter describes the evolving field of nanotoxicology and why nanomaterials may be of toxicological concern, what physicochemical characteristics of nanomaterials may impact their toxicological potential and dosimetry issues that may need to be considered when designing toxicological studies. It discusses the safety assessment process that is currently used to evaluate the safety of chemical substances developed for use in consumer products, such as foods, food packaging, personal care products, pesticides, drugs, and medical diagnostics and how this process may or may not need to be modified for nanomaterials. Because of the importance of characterizing the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials for toxicological evaluation, the process and techniques available to accomplish is explained. It also describes the types of toxicological studies that may be required to perform a hazard evaluation of nanomaterials and suggested frameworks for evaluating nanomaterials. Further it articulates some limitations and challenges faced by scientists, academicians, regulators, and industry personnel when evaluating the human and environmental health risks of nanomaterials.
