Optimising rail grinding strategies on the Malmbanan

This article details work that has been underway during the past decade to improve rail life on Sweden's heavy haul iron ore railway, as traffic and axleloads increase. Improvements include harder rail steels, changes to rail and wheel profiles, and improving the rail grinding regime. Strategies for track maintenance and rail grinding are presented, as well as details of transverse profile measurements. Initial results of testing are included.
