Despite the heavy toll sprawling development has had on our quality of life, it remains a common practice around the country. Traffic congestion is at record levels; open spaces are becoming rare and a "sense of community" has been nearly lost. This book challenges the current wisdom that high quality and thoughtful development is too expensive. Using Florida as an example, the author searched for and studied the best contemporary developments. This book outlines forty three practices in four areas of development: land use, transportation, environment and housing. Specific examples are given which demonstrate that careful planning can create developments which provide shopping and recreational opportunities, environmental protection, affordable housing and road and transportation networks.
