Animation Validation of Obese Virtual Pediatric Patients Using a FLACC Pain Scale

We report on an experiment conducted to validate the nonverbal behaviors of our virtual patients as described by the standardized Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolabiltiy scale [1] in relation to whether the virtual patient’s gender or obesity has an affect on the participants’ ability to correctly detect those animations. The results of this experiment provide insight into the feasibility of using a standardized pain scale as a method to validate virtual patients animations.
