Founded in 1997, Sulzer Hexis Ltd develops solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) installations that can supply the basic electrical needs of a household. The waste heat generated can be decoupled with heat-exchangers and fed to the heating system or to the domestic hot water supply. In this way, the fuel employed can be utilised more efficiently than with the conventional combination of central electricity works and decentralised heating. The first commercial fuel cell system with an output of 1.5 kW el will be launched in 2001.
