Globally, there has been ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption in response to the climate change. In this study, energy saving technologies in buildings were classified into two major categories to analyze the energy saving potential in high-performance buildings. The two categories are active(HVAC) control and renewable energy. In detail, the simulation was conducted for the specific alternatives of five air-conditioning systems, four plant systems, and geothermal renewable energy methods. EnergyPlus v8.4 was used for the simulation process and the standard medium office building in ASHRAE 90.1 was selected as a base model. We reviewed each technology regarding energy saving rate. Also, we analyzed energy saving potential for each technology by breaking down the results of the energy saving rates in detail. The results showed that approximately 29.9∼45.6% of energy consumption could be reduced through air-conditioning systems, and approximately 19.7∼36.8% energy could be saved through plant systems. In addition, renewable energy saving rate was evaluated to be 31.2% of total energy. When two technologies(active, renewable energy) were combined properly, it could save up to 61.6% energy. To accomplish a high energy saving rate in high-performance buildings, the saving potential of each technology factor should be considered first. It is then necessary to integrate passive factors, active factors, and renewable energy together.
