A novel supporting structure generation scheme to 3D printing

In this paper, we propose a scheme to generating support structure for printing complex 3D models. We first simplify the model by reducing the number of facets using quadric decimation algorithm. Then the overhang area are detected by the normal of the facets. All of the overhang regions are projected onto the bottom. The supporting points could be obtained by Poisson disk sampling in the projected overhang area. Then the dependent points for each supporting point is detected using Cone scanning algorithm. The simulated and practical experimental results show that the proposed scheme could save about 50% supporting materials.
