Model experiments in load bearing brickwork

Abstract This paper describes the development of a technique for the investigation of the strength of load-bearing brickwork structures using 1 6 - scale models. Preliminary work is reported in which tests on piers and walls previously carried out at full scale were repeated at 1 3 and 1 6 scale. These tests showed that it would be possible to deduce the strength of these elements from the model tests. The model technique was subsequently applied to an investigation of the resistance of 4 1 2 -in brickwork panels to horizontal shear with special reference to the effect of vertical compression. Finally, a test on a three storey cross-wall structure is described.
