On the occurrence of non-selfadjointness in the control of elastic structures

SummaryIn this paper, the deflection control of a king post truss has been investigated assuming that the control consists in adjusting the tension in the cable underpinning the post of the truss. It has been shown that flutter can be caused by this control if the sensor is located in a range of strong non-selfadjointness. Since the actuator is apparently not able to decide from which sensor location the signal is arriving, it is suggested to design the truss for the most detrimental position of the sensor in the range of strong non-selfadjointness. It is also shown that even for the sensor positioned at midspan care should be taken to avoid a resonance like instability with respect to the second eigenfrequency of the beam.
