Some observations on communications theory

Dallas W. Smythe's perceptive observations continue the series of articles on communication theory initiated in the last issue of this journal. He challenges the dependence of communication research on "scientism" and the "controlled experiment" and presents the case for the use of rigorous logic and observation as valid research "evidence." Dr. Smythe is a Research Professor in the Institute of Communications Research and Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois.
