An alternative procedure for the design of HV and EHV overhead transmission lines is presented. It is based on the simultaneous full utilization of the conductors' current carrying capacity, the electric insulating capability of air as well as the satisfaction of the line's steady state stability condition. The line, of a given length, is assumed to operate without any series or shunt compensation. The suggested procedure determines the transmission voltage, the tower dimensions, the number and radii of the subconductors and the bundle configuration. Additional conditions and/or constraints regarding several environmental issues, such as the electrostatic and magnetic fields at the ground level, the availability of land for the line corridor and the line's visual impact, can be used for selecting a particular line design from several mathematically possible solutions.
