Power grid stability protection against GIC using a capacitive grounding circuit

This paper investigates a method to minimize the flow of geo-magnetically induced currents (GIC) through power transformers. The solution examined was an AC grounding path provided by a capacitor between the earth ground and the neutral point of a power transformer only when GIC was detected. The effectiveness and problems of this approach were investigated through simulation of a 765 kV transmission system in an electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation program.
