A novel technique for generating millimetre-wave signals through phase-to-intensity modulation (PM-IM) conversion in chirped fibre gratings is presented. Experimental results at 28 GHz show excellent phase noise performance (-87 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz). It is also demonstrated that this technique may be used for harmonically upconverting intermediate frequency signals to the microwave/millimetre-wave hand achieving BER <10/sup -9/ in QPSK transmissions.
