Firewood Transport with Chutes

ABSTRACT PLASTIC chutes were tested on a variety of slopes with different species of firewood. All wood moved by gravity on slopes steeper than 26%, with excessive speeds exhibited on slopes over 40% and longer than 30 m. Half round sections of pipe with a 25.4 cm diameter, 0.43 cm wall thickness and 6.1 m length proved to be serviceable in usage and portable enough for efficient movement by one person. Residual stands were unharmed by this thinning method. With proper planning, both transport and loading can be combined in one handling. In locales where firewood values are high, chutes may provide an economic method of removing firewood from steep slopes.
