Design of Concrete Pavement Slab Thickness and Joints at Intersection

Concrete pavement of an intersection has lower long-term maintenance cost and longer service life than asphalt pavement.According to the intersection pavement design method of ACPA,some special consideration for pavement design, evaluation of the existing pavement, and illustration of physical and functional areas were proposed. In designing of slab thickness, the calculation of the slab thickness was done based on the information such as the two-way average daily traffic, vehicle types, and maximum axle loading;and a table was made by street classification. The joint design included joint spacing, types and layout. The transverse joints, longitudinal joints, isolation joints, including dowel bar construction technology were introduced too.The joint layout depended on the experience, and taked into consideration the layout of the separate belt, lane, and embedded fixtures.
