The possibilities of maximizing the gain in the spatial processing of frequency coherent multimode signals in the horizontal plane in an underwater sound channel are investigated theoretically. The method of determining an orthogonal basis of amplitude phase distributions in mode space is used to analyze the efficiency of linear and quadratic signal processing in an isotropic noise field as a function of the number of elements in the array, the scale of intermodal correlations, and the mutual orthogonality of modes in the receiving aperture
