Dielectric Coatings and Particle Movement in GIS/GITL Systems

Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Gas Insulated Transmission Line (GITL) technology is now well established, with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as the principal insulation medium. in field installations it has been observed that metallic particle contamination is often present in GIS/GITL and such contamination adversely affects the insulation integrity. Power industry has proposed, and in some cases utilizes, several methods to control and minimize the effect of particle contamination. One such technique is to apply a dielectric (high resistance) coating to the inside surface of the outer GIS/GITL enclosure.
