The future role of technology in environmental management

Abstract Technology can play a role in solving environmental problems, although structural measures are also required if we are to realize a future sustainable society. This article takes the view that technology can have both positive and negative impacts on the environment, and there is a social dimension to the development and use of technology. Subsequently, how far environmental concerns are being accounted for in the development of specific technologies is discussed. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the possibilities for bringing future technological progress optimally into line with environmental management, and the drawbacks associated with this.
