A Shuffle-Based Alternative to the ADM Interconnection Architecture

Ternary shuffle-exchange architectures are investigated in this paper as an alternative to augmented data manipulator type networks for multiprocessor interconnections. These architectures use a 3 × 3 switch as the building block and are aimed at applications requiring higher performance levels than that of multistage Omega type networks. A generalization of the k-ary shuffle-exchange architecture to non-power-of-k system sizes permits the construction of ternary switching networks that are fundamentally different from the ADM topology. The new networks require fewer stages and provide superior performance in an MIMD environment.
