A 40 Gb/s optical receiver : Special issue on transmission systems

40 Gb/s operation of an optical receiver has been successfully achieved utilizing GaAs-Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (HBT)-ICs. The optical receiver card is composed of an optical front-end module, baseband amplifier modules and a timing extraction circuit, and has exhibited a high receiver sensitivity of -22.6 dBm at a bit error rate of 10 -11 .
