The Influence of Alloy Composition and Retained Austenite on Scuffing Resistance

The influence of alloy composition Cr and Ni and retained austenite rated from 4.2% to 30.8% on scuffing resistance of gear steels was investigated by laboratory experiments with disc machine. The RA has a significant influence on scuffing resistance under light load. Under heavy load the alloy composition has greater influence than RA. It is not necessary to control the RA content in heavily loaded gears. The mechanism of such a phenomenon was discussed.
