Application of erasure decoding in fiber optical systems with FEC

Error-and-erasure decoding scheme is first proposed in optical receivers using FEC. Almost 1.3 dB of additional coding gain at output BER of 10/sup -12/ can be estimated for the intact RS (255,239) coding scheme.
