11 – Case studies

Publisher Summary The application of the total productive maintenance (TPM) process varies significantly according to the industry sector and according to the particular company or enterprise. The founding principles and pillars of TPM must not, however, be corrupted so that they become unrecognizable. The key to success is to tailor and adapt the principles to reflect the specific business drivers; the status and future intentions of other continuous improvement/world-class enabling tools; the management style and existing culture; and the priority, pace, and resource issues implicit in securing a successful TPM journey. This chapter illustrates these vitally important differences through the case studies of seven companies: (1) 3M Newton Aycliffe, (2) Adams (Warner Lambert), (3) BP Amoco Forties Field, (4) Elkes Biscuits, (5) Henkel, (6) RHP Bearings, Blackburn, and (7) RJB Mining.
