1 Gbit/s optical free space link operating over 40 m system and applications

The authors describe a 1 Gbit/s free space line-of-sight infrared link operating over 40m with a power margin of 10dB, and present experimental results of its operation. The implications of atmospheric attenuation, particularly by fog, on system availability are considered. They also discuss possible telecomms applications for such a system.
