A Joint Radar-Communication System Based on OCDM-OFDM Scheme

Waveform design for joint radar-communication plays a significant role in recent years, and many approaches focus on satisfying orthogonality in time, frequency and coding separately. This paper describes a joint radar-communication system based on a new waveform, called orthogonal chirp division multiplexing in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system (OCDM-OFDM). By introducing OCDM, which satisfies orthogonality in the chirp domain, into OFDM scheme, the new joint waveform multiplexes a bank of orthogonal chirped waveforms in orthogonal subcarriers and therefore achieves higher communication rate. Furthermore, the implementation of the joint system based on OCDM-OFDM is discussed. Simulation results show that by applying 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) for embedding communication date, the proposed joint system provides remarkable communication and radar performance simultaneously.
