THE RATE OF WATER TRANSFER FROM THE AMNIOTIC SAC WITH ADVANCING PREGNANCY *

THE transfer rate of deuterium oxide from the amniotic sac was measured in 20 patients with a normal pregnancy between 14 and 43 weeks in duration. None of the patients had any significant illness, their pregnancies had progressed normally up to the time of study, they were all certain of the date of their last menstrual period and had previously had a regular menstrual cycle. Patients studied in early pregnancy had been recommended for termination of pregnancy on psychiatric grounds but none was on any form of drug therapy.
