According to the IDU (Instituto de Desarrollo Urbano Urban DevelopmentInstitute) (2008) the most commonly used procedure for rehabilitation of flexibleand rigid pavements has been the pouring of an overlay of asphalt concrete.Nevertheless, this has not been a completely efficient alternative because thestructural condition and capacity of the cracked pavement as well as the quality ofthe asphalt mix are usually not taken into consideration. This can lead to thepremature appearance of new cracks which affects the performance and life of therestored pavement. To investigate fatigue and reflective cracking resulting in damage to pavementstructures we analyzed the behavior of various Stress Absorbing MembraneInterlayers (S.A.M.I.). Different geo-synthetic membranes were combined with hotmix asphalt modified with rubber and also with conventional hot mix asphalt.Fatigue resistance was evaluated using an Overlay Tester which simulatesdamage caused by the opening and closing of cracks due to movements ofpavement blocks. This study evaluated the efficiency of different S.A.M.I. variationsfor rehabilitation of pavement damaged by reflecting cracking.
