Strength of fabric reinforced sand under axisymmetric loading

Abstract The effect of the confining pressure on the friction resistance and the tension in the fabric reinforcement have been investigated using 100 mm and 200 mm diameter cylindrical sand samples reinforced with horizontal fabric layers. The study shows that: (1) the spacing, (2) the initial applied confining pressure, and (3) the stiffness and strength of the fabric are important. A simple method has been proposed which relates the force in the fabric to the increased strength. A good correlation was found with test results.
