Chapter Seven - Mathematical Optimization Techniques for Mass Integration

Chapter 6, Combining Mass-Integration Strategies, presented a graphical approach to the development of combined mass-integration strategies. This chapter presents mathematical optimization techniques for mass integration including mass-exchange interception and rerouting of targeted species throughout the process. Since the interception devices in this chapter are limited to mass-exchange operations, the species interception network or waste-interception network becomes a mass-exchange network. Other separation networks (e.g., heat-induced separation and membrane systems) can be similarly included in the interception network. The emphasis in this chapter is on targeting pollution at the heart of the plant rather than dealing with pollutants in terminal waste streams. The chapter also provides a mathematical framework for tackling pollution as a multimedia (multiphase) problem.
