The author looks at the growth in the use of online instruction in teaching foreign languages and discusses efforts to assess the effectiveness of such instruction. He notes that there has been more research on online foreign language study at the university level than at the elementary and secondary levels. Non-school online language learning programs including Rosetta Stone and Duolingo are also discussed.
