Electron-Density Measurement in Lightning from Stark-Broadening of Hα

Electron densities between 1×1017 cm−3 and 5×1017 cm−3 are found for three lightning strokes by comparing the profiles of Stark-broadened Hα lines with theoretical profiles. The results are discussed and compared with electron density determinations made from line intensity measurements.
