URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING IN THE UNITED STATES: AN HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

This book reviews the historical development of the U.S. urban transportation planning process from its beginnings in early highway and transit planning to its current focus on intermodal connectivity, sustainable development, and broad participation in the planning process. The focus is on key events in the evolution of urban transportation planning, including developments in technical procedures, philosophy, processes, and institutions. The book takes a multimodal perspective, aiming to provide a balanced view among a number of subject areas including federal legislation; relevant federal regulations and policies; highway and transit concerns; energy, safety, and environmental issues; technological developments; transportation service alternatives; and national transportation studies and data resources.
