Identification of the Essential Oil of Salvia indica L.

Abstract The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Salvia indica L. growing wild in Iran was analyzed by a combination of capillary GC and GC-MS. Its mean oil content was 0.8 % (w/w). Twenty-seven components were identified in the oil, representing approximately 93.1 % of the total oil. The oil of Salvia indica is dominated by sesquiterpenes (84.4 %). Its main components were globulol (24.1 %), aromadenderon(10.1 %) and germacrene (10.4 %). Twelve monoterpenes were identified which their contents ranging from 0.09 to 2.5 % in the oil analyzed.
