Flood Index Estimation Using L-Band Sar Data for Assam Flood Prone Regions

The need for accurate rapid flood maps is demanding to understand the impact for post disaster responses. In this paper, Flood Index (FI) based rapid flood map is generated using ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data acquired in FBD mode with 6.25m resolution for 2016 flood event in Assam, India. A ROG false color map is generated with Normalized Difference Flood Index (NDFI), Normalized Difference Flood Vegetation Index (NDFVI) and a reference map to identify different flooded features. The method, in conjunction with flood indices that are developed and tested for C-band showed improved results with L-band owing to its penetration capability. It clearly distinguished the flooded water, shallow water and the flooded vegetation. The flooded area in the study region is found to be 26.88 Sq.km.
