Development of Protection Scheme for Active Distribution Systems with Penetration of Distributed Generation

A significant increase in the penetration of distributed generation has resulted in operating the distributed systems with distributed generation in islanded mode. One of the major problems with implementation of that system is designing a proper protection scheme. It has been shown that conventional protection schemes will not operate successfully. This research, proposes a communication-assisted for microgrids to coordinate between the protection elements using energy storage device to isolate the fault from the system. Primary and back up protection were studied according to IEEE Std C37.112 to isolate the fault properly. The proposed technique investigated under several types of faults at different locations in the system. Several simulations are carried out to demonstrate the proposed protection algorithm.
