A COMPARISON OF DIRECT AND INDIRECT METHODS FOR DETERMINING ACCIDENT POTENTIAL

THE METHODS OF DETERMINING THE ACCIDENT POTENTIAL OF A HIGHWAY SITE CAN BE CATEGORIZED INTO DIRECT AND INDIRECT APPROACHES. PRINCIPAL ADVANTAGES AND SHORTCOMINGS OF EACH OF THESE TWO CATEGORIES ARE DISCUSSED. A COMPARISON OF THE TWO CATEGORIES LEADS TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THERE APPEARS TO BE NO ADVANTAGE IN THE USE OF THE INDIRECT APPROACHES AS LONG AS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRAFFIC SAFETY AND THE MULTITUDE OF FACTORS AFFECTING TRAFFIC SAFETY CANNOT BE QUANTIFIED. /AUTHOR/
